Comment on ‘‘Signature of pending earthquake from electromagnetic anomalies’’ by K. Eftaxias et al

چکیده
[1] Eftaxias et al. [2001], hereafter cited as ‘‘E01,’’ claim to have observed VLF (very low frequency) radio waves that ‘‘might be considered as signatures of a pending earthquake.’’ For the following reasons, this claim should not be accepted. (1) Previous such claims have proved groundless. In the absence of compelling evidence, which E01 do not provide, further such claims should be regarded skeptically. (2) The observed signals appear consistent with well known types of background noise that are unrelated to earthquakes. (3) E01 did not present a quantitative and objectively testable model of the relation between the observed signals and the earthquake source parameters. (4) E01’s correlation between the observed signals and the earthquake appears to be arbitrary. (5) E01 did not present any objective evidence of a correlation beyond random chance, nor did they present any method by which objective tests might be made in the future.

Comment on “Temporal and spatial precursors
We review the recent paper by Su et al. (2013). Using Global Position System and Global Ionospheric Maps data, Su et al. claimed to have found ionospheric precursors a few days before the 16 October 1999 Hector Mine, California, earthquake. They proposed that this type of analysis of ionospheric data may be useful for locating forthcoming large earthquakes. In this Comment, we reexamine these d...
متن کاملA unified approach of catastrophic events
Although there is an accumulated charge of theoretical, computational, and numerical work, like catastrophe theory, bifurcation theory, stochastic and deterministic chaos theory, there is an important feeling that these matters do not completely cover the physics of real catastrophic events. Recent studies have suggested that a large variety of complex processes, including earthquakes, heartbea...
متن کاملComment on “Deformation of compliant fault zones induced by nearby earthquakes: Theoretical investigations
[1] Duan et al. [2011] recently presented analysis of deformation caused by dynamic and static stress changes on fault zones that have reduced strength and effective elastic moduli relative to the ambient rocks. Low-rigidity fault zones were previously proposed to explain anomalous geodetic signals around major crustal faults in the vicinity of large earthquakes [e.g., Fialko et al., 2002; Fial...
متن کاملHow Can a Global Social Support System Hope to Achieve Fairer Competiveness?; Comment on “A Global Social Support System: What the International Community Could Learn From the United States’ National Basketball Association”
Ooms et al sets out some good general principles for a global social support system to improve fairer global competitiveness as a result of redistribution. This commentary sets out to summarize some of the conditions that would need to be satisfied for it to level up gradients in inequality through such a social support system, using the National Basketball Association (NBA) example as a point ...
متن کاملDouble voter perceptible blind signature based electronic voting protocol
Mu et al. have proposed an electronic voting protocol and claimed that it protects anonymity of voters, detects double voting and authenticates eligible voters. It has been shown that it does not protect voter's privacy and prevent double voting. After that, several schemes have been presented to fulfill these properties. However, many of them suffer from the same weaknesses. In this p...
